This centre issues Pollution Under Control Certificates(PUC) if the vehicle is found meeting prescribed emission norms. In case the vehicle is found polluting beyond prescribed norms, necessary repairs/ tuning in the vehicle would be required.

Did you know what the legal mandatory requirements for your vehicle are? A valid driving license, a valid insurance coverage and of course, a PUC Certificate are the required documents, right? While the first is very commonly known to vehicle owners, it is the last two which are either ignored, avoided or are unknown. While a compulsory insurance coverage is mandated by the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988; the PUC Certification, also compulsory, is mandated by the Central Motor Vehicle Rule, 1989. Do you understand what does the PUC Certificate entail and its requirements ? Let’s take a look.

What is PUC Certificate ?

PUC Stands for Pollution Under Control and is a Certification Mark, which is granted to vehicles that successfully undergo the PUC Test specified by the Rule. The certification depicts that the emissions from the vehicle meet the standard pollution norms and do not pollute the environment.

Why is a PUC Certificate Required ?

The emissions from the vehicles emit smoke which has the potential to pollute the environment if left unchecked. As such, there must be a norm to check the vehicle emission levels to determine how safe they are and whether they contribute to air pollution. As such, the rule for undergoing a specified PUC test and obtaining the PUC Certificate was mandated by the Central Motor Vehicle Rule, 1989.
